Victoria Embankment Foreshore

By day the team is completing the architectural and landscape elements of the new area of public land including a new pergola structure and the three kiosk buildings. 

Works have recently taken place to install new warning lights and lighting cabling. The Tideway teams are now testing this lighting systems at this site. From March 2024 the team has been working at night time. Four years ago, we installed a steel flume, a 30m long large pipe, into the existing sewer to divert the sewage flow while we were constructing the structures and chambers for the new super sewer. That work is complete, so we now are removing the flume. All the works are taking place underground, in the existing sewer system.

Works will take place at night with times dictated by the tides. The work has to be carried out at night. This is when the existing Thames Water assets, such as sluice gates and valves, are in minimal use and may be closed with the flows into the network restricted. This allows for a safe environment for the flume removal works to take place. On the nights when the tides are favourable, we expect to be on site for around 4.5 hours.

Apart from the underground works there may be a number of staff at ground level and the occasional movement of tools. We do not expect the works to generate extra noise.

Standard working hours are:

• Monday to Friday: 8am to 6pm 
• Saturday: 8.30am to 1pm

• Two-way traffic flow along Victoria Embankment will be maintained at all times
• All static machinery and plant is screened or enclosed
• Footpath diversions are clearly signposted
• Low level directional lighting
• We work closely with the local authority and Transport for London to plan for major events such as New Year's Eve and the London Marathon
• The excavated material handling area was enclosed

At Victoria we are creating a new area of public realm built over our shaft and underground structures. Like some of our other sites the new public space at Victoria will be 'floodable' at high tides, giving Londoners the first opportunity of its kind to dip their toes in what will be a cleaner River Thames. For more information on our new public open spaces, visit our webpage.
