Epic new documentary tells the behind-the-scenes story of London’s super sewer project
An independent production from ‘In The Dark Productions’ charts the highs, lows, and extraordinary challenges behind the building of the Thames Tideway Tunnel.
- Filmed over eight years by embedded producers with unprecedented access to Tideway’s teams, sites, and historic archive
- Reveals dramatic inside stories – including the moment a 1,200-tonne tunnelling machine passed beneath Tower Bridge
- Captures the human and engineering challenges behind London’s ‘super sewer’ – told by the people who built it
- Asks whether the tunnel is a long-term solution to river pollution and explores the urgent need for sustainable drainage systems in the face of climate change and growing environmental pressures
A new documentary chronicling the construction of London’s super sewer is now available online.
Produced by In The Dark Productions (ITD), ‘Beneath Your Feet – The Thames Tideway Tunnel Story’ offers an unprecedented, behind-the-scenes insight into one of the most complex engineering projects in the UK.
Filmed over the past eight years, and with unique and exclusive access to the project’s archive and executive team, the film reveals the untold story of Tideway – the massive infrastructure scheme built beneath the capital to clean up the River Thames.
ITD Director Endaf Jones said: “It has been a privilege to see the construction of the super sewer up close, so to have had the opportunity to produce this feature-length film is truly fantastic.
“This is not just a film about concrete and tunnelling – it’s about the people behind the project. It’s about the challenges they were forced to overcome, the problems they solved, and their reflections on delivering a mega-project in one of the world’s most vibrant cities.”
In The Dark were allowed editorial independence in producing the film, capturing the real jeopardy faced throughout the construction. With full creative freedom, the filmmakers shine a light on the many moments of uncertainty, ingenuity, and resilience that shaped the project – from critical engineering challenges to the human stories of those who built it.
Featuring candid interviews with frontline workers, engineers, and leaders – including Tideway CEO Andy Mitchell – Beneath Your Feet goes far beyond the blueprint. It explores what it means to take on a project of unprecedented scale, under the streets of one of the world’s busiest cities.
Beneath Your Feet – The Thames Tideway Tunnel Story is now available to rent and buy on Amazon Prime Video – here – with a portion of the proceeds going to river-based London charities.

In The Dark Productions is an independent production company dedicated to telling powerful, long-form stories that inspire change. Most recently, ITD produced Everest for Hambo (released on Amazon Prime Video in 2023), chronicling an extraordinary expedition to Mount Everest led by a team including ITD founder Stuart Kershaw . The expedition was undertaken to support the Get Busy Living Centre, a rehabilitation facility founded by Matt Hampson—an ex-rugby international turned inspirational figure following a life-changing spinal injury.
