2025 – a year to remember
Twenty-twenty-five has been an important year for the Tideway project – perhaps the most important year to-date, as the new infrastructure began fully protecting the Thames.
Here, we round up some of the key moments of of the year – from Royal visits to art unveilings.
In February, after ten years of construction work, the last of 21 connections was made between the original Victorian sewers and the new 25km Thames Tideway Tunnel, bringing the entire system online to protect the tidal Thames from sewage pollution.
You can read more about that connection here.
The entire system has now captured almost 13 million tonnes of storm sewage that would previously have polluted the river.
Then in May, Tideway welcomed His Majesty The King to meet the workforce behind the Tideway project at Bazalgette Embankment – a 1.5-acre piece of public realm reclaimed from the Thames.

Twenty-twenty-five also saw many new public spaces open, often with permanent artwork unveiled for the first time – including at Carnwath Road, Effra Quay and the Isle of Effra, Heathwall Quay, Tyburn Quay, and Deptford.

Elsewhere, at sites not publicly accessible, other artworks were unveiled – for example, at Greenwich Pumping Station, King Edward Memorial Park, and Earl Pumping Station.

These visits were attended by many VIPs – including the Mayor of London, local mayors, MPs, and members of the Royal Family, including Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal.

In September, we saw the release of a brand-new documentary charting the construction of London’s super sewer. Beneath Your Feet – The Thames Tideway Tunnel Story (produced by In The Dark Productions) shared exclusive behind-the-scenes footage the UK’s most ambitious engineering project, with a portion of all proceeds go towards supporting river-based London charities.
